Marilyn Monroe’s car up for auction

A two-seater convertible car owned by Marilyn Monroe is going up for auction in November and could fetch up to $500,000 organisers said on Tuesday.

The 1956 raven black Ford Thunderbird, owned by the movie star for six years until shortly before her death in 1962, is being auctioned for the first time.

Monroe, one of the most collectible celebrities, was pictured driving in the car with her husband, playwright Arthur Miller, shortly after their June 1956 wedding.

Darren Julien, president of Julien’s Auctions, said the car was “not only part of automotive history but comes with an aura of glamour, romance and tragedy of a true Hollywood legend.” Monroe gifted the Thunderbird to the son of her acting coach, Lee Strasberg, in 1962. The current owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, tracked the vehicle down through registration and other documents that were sold in 2016 as part of Strasberg’s estate.

The car has undergone restoration but retains many original parts.

“Finding this car, a classic two-seater model, after 56 plus years of its unknown whereabouts, was a singular event. No other car has been located and documented as owned by the incomparable Marilyn Monroe,” the current owner said in a statement.

The car will be sold at Julien’s Auctions in Los Angeles on November 17.

Hyundai 2018 Santro

Hyundai has re-launched the Santro in a completely new package in India at a starting price of Rs 3.89 lakh (introductory, ex showroom). The new Santro is powered by a 1.1-litre four-cylinder petrol engine only but there is an option for automatic as well. It can churn out 68bhp of power and 99Nm of torque with a claimed fuel efficiency of 20.3kmpl. There are five variants to choose from – Dlite, Era, Magna, Sportz and Asta. The auto option though is only in Magna and Sportz while there is the option of company-fitted CNG in manual variants of Magna and Sportz. The CNG variants will have a max power output of 58bhp and max torque rating of 84Nm. Fuel efficiency figures are claimed to be 30.5km per kg.

All-New Honda CR-V

Honda has launched the all-new CR-V at a starting price of Rs 28.15 lakh (ex showroom price) and has been priced upwards to Rs 32.75 lakh (Diesel AWD). The vehicle comes with a 1.6-litre turbocharged diesel unit that churns out 120 bhp of max power and 300 Nm of torque. It is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission box. There is also a 2-litre petrol unit that belts out 154 hp of max power and 192 Nm of max torque. The diesel variant assures a fuel efficiency – 19.5kmpl for 2WD, 18.3kmpl for AWD. The petrol only gets a front-wheel drive with fuel efficiency of 14.4kmpl.
